Research Project: DETECTION OF EMERGING LIVESTOCK PATHOGENS

Location: Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock

Project Number: 3625-32000-088-16
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 30, 2005
End Date: Jul 31, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is twofold: first, develop assays for the purpose of screening diagnostic specimens collected from livestock for known and unknown viruses; and second, evaluate the potential of these assays for rapid disease diagnosis.

Approach:
The proposed collaborative research will be conducted by scientists from the NADC and Washington University. It will focus on evaluating and adapting for veterinary use virus detection techniques utilized at Washington University for the detection of all known and potentially unknown viruses in humans. These assays will be tested on clinical samples provided by NADC scientists from controlled experiments and field cases.
