Research Project: IMPROVEMENT IN GREAT LAKES AQUACULTURE PRODUCTION
2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This progress report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and the Wisconsin Aquatic Technology & Environmental Research Institute of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Additional details can be found in the report for the parent project 3655-31000-019-00D, "Great Lakes Aquaculture Research." The aquaculture production of Great Lakes fin-fish as a high quality protein food source for human consumption is an untapped resource in the U.S. food production sector. The goal of this cooperative project is to enhance and stimulate aquaculture in the Great Lakes region and place it on a sound technical, scientific, and economic basis. The primary objectives of this cooperative research program are:.
1)to develop genetically improved domesticated broodstock of yellow perch with traits for year-round reproduction, enhanced growth, disease resistance, and enhanced gamete production and quality;.
2)to develop the optimal culture technology for year-round fingerling production and one-year grow out; and.
3)to develop environmentally compatible and sustainable aquaculture systems for year-round viable production of Great Lakes species. Equipment has been purchased to support research of a new ARS SY to collaborate with UW- Milwaukee in this new research endeavor. Recruitment is currently underway for a scientist to initiate this research.
