What We Do

The Division of Fire and Aviation Management is under the Associate Directorate for Visitor and Resource Protection for the National Park Service (see organization chart below). The division facilitates three separate branches which work together and with various interdisciplinary and interagency partners to fulfill the National Park Service mission of protecting and preserving America’s heritage. These separate branches are Wildland Fire, Structural Fire, and Aviation.

Branch of Widland Fire

Mission:
The National Park Service manages wildland fire to protect the public, communities and infrastructure, conserve natural and cultural resources, and restore and maintain ecological health.

Branch of Structural Fire

Mission:
To establish, maintain and operate a viable, integrated and multi-disciplinary structural fire protection program to keep visitors, employees, dependents, buildings and cultural resources of the National Park Service safe from fire, life safety and related hazards.

Branch of Aviation

Mission:
The National Park Service Aviation Management Program provides leadership at the national, regional and park levels to ensure safe and efficient use of aviation resources.
