Research Project: DISCOVERY OF NEW PHYTOCHEMICALS IN GUAR

Location: Griffin, Georgia

Project Number: 6607-21000-009-10
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 16, 2006
End Date: Apr 01, 2008

Objective:
To identify useful flavonoid compounds in guar (Cyamopsis Tetra-Gonoloba) using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in house. Determine molecular weight and chemical structure for unique flavonoids discovered in guar.

Approach:
Dr. Morris and Wang (ARS) will use High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (GPLC) to purify unknown flavonoids. Dr. Oliver Yu will determine molecular weight of unknown flavonoid using liquid chromatograph-mass spectrophotometer (LC-MS) and identify the unknown compound by determining structure using the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) procedure.
