Research Project: SCREENING OAT GERMPLASM FOR RESISTANCE TO KEY DISEASES

Location: Aberdeen, Idaho

Project Number: 5366-21000-028-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 14, 2004
End Date: Jul 13, 2009

Objective:
Resistance to key diseases of oat is a critical trait for oat improvement nationwide. The purpose of this agreement is to screen oat germplasm generated in the ARS program in Aberdeen, ID at a location identified by researchers at Texas A & M University as a 'hot spot' for fungal and viral diseases of small grains. Through this effort, resistant material will be identified that will have utility for oat breeders and geneticists.

Approach:
Cultivars, breeding lines, special screening nurseries, and segregating populations will be sent from the ARS Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research Unit in Aberdeen, ID to cooperators at Texas A & M University. Plantings will be made in the fall near Castroville TX and resistance to crown rust, stem rust, and barley yellow dwarf virus will be assessed in the spring of the following year. Data will be used to make selections and to advance basic understanding of resistance to these important diseases.Documents SCA with Texas A&M. Formerly 5366-21000-024-08S (5/08).
