Research Project: DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION OF TRITICEAE GENOMICS RESOURCES

Location: Genomics and Gene Discovery

Project Number: 5325-21000-014-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 28, 2001
End Date: Sep 14, 2006

Objective:
The Triticeae crops (wheat, barley, rye, triticale) are a critcal component of US agriculture and consumer diet. To maintain the current status of these crops, and to meet the anticipated future demands, it is necessary to fully apply modern technologies to these crops. This project will develope and coordinate genomics and bioinformatics technologies and protocols to the triticeae crops, and will make these resources available to all the US researchers and other relevant sectors.

Approach:
1) Contribute to the maintenance of the GrainGenes database by collection & formatting of important data resources & classes. 2) Develop software tools for computer processing of data for both the GrainGenes databases and for both in-house and collaborative genomics projects. 3) Collaborate in the development and distribution of BAC (bacterial-artificial-chromosome) libraries for wheat and barley. 4) Collaborate in the development of DNA libraries and EST (expressed-sequence-tag) databases for wheat and closely related species.
