Research Project:
SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE NORTH AMERICAN PLANT COLLECTIONS CONSORTIUM
Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit
2007 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
This project will focus on the development of a national collection of ornamental plant germplasm. This program known as the North American Plant Collection Consortium(NAPCC) coordinated by the American Public Garden Association in collaboration with the U.S. National Arboretum.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Identify botanical gardens and arboreta in North America with outstanding quality collections of documented ornamental plants for inclusion in the North American Plant Collection Consortium. Review those institutions and collections to be certain they qualify to be a member. The NAPCC program will compliment the Agricultural Research Service Woody Plant Germplasm Repository and the National Plant Germplasm System and bring together the data from these organizations to provide a more complete inventory of germplasm collections in North America.
3.Progress Report
This report documents research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and the American Public Garden Association (APGA) concerning the North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC). Additional results of the research can be found in the report for the parent project 1230-21000-049-00D "Genetic Resources, Evaluation and Information Management of Woody Landscape Plant Germplasm." Monitoring of this SCA is done by phone calls and frequent e-mails between the NAPCC coordinator and WLPGR Curator (ADODR), which occurs as often as once a month. The ADODR is an active participant in many of the activities of the NAPCC including Reviewer Training Workshops and outreach programs which are designed to educate the Public Garden Community about the NAPCC program. An opportunity of this nature occurred recently at the APGA annual conference which was held at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C.
