Research Project: PRIMARY AND BACKUP STORAGE OF NATIONAL TREE SEED LABORATORY MATERIAL AT NATIONAL CENTER FOR GENETIC RESOURCES PRESERVATION
2006 Annual Report

4a.List the single most significant research accomplishment during FY 2006.
This Agreement established the framework for collaborative research to provide primary and safety back-up storage for seed from USDA Forest Service land. ARS has provided supplies, training in GRIN, and established the Forest service National Tree Seed Laboratory as a satellite site for GRIN data entry. However, as mentioned above, the USDA Forest Service National Tree Seed Laboratory has not shipped any seed to date to the NCGRP for safety back-up.

4b.List other significant research accomplishment(s), if any.
None.

4c.List significant activities that support special target populations.
None.

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under the Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement # 58-5402-5-0104N between ARS and USDA, Forest Service. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 5402-21000-006-00D Preservation and Quality Assessment of Plant Genetic Resources.

The objective of this Agreement is to establish a general framework for the cooperation and participation among cooperators in the conservation of plant species within the National Forests and private forest lands of the US. These include tree species as well as other plant species, some of which are listed or tending toward federal listing as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), 16 U.S.C.

The cooperators propose to work together to provide a secure back-up or primary storage facility for the storage of this valuable plant germplasm and to incorporate this germplasm into a central data system, the Germplasm Resources Information System (GRIN) database of the USDA’s National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS).
