Research Project: DISTRIBUTION AND EVALUATION OF WOLLEMIA NOBILIS

Location: Gardens Unit

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
Wollemi Pines Distributed This report serves to document research conducted under a non-funded cooperative agreement between ARS and Wollemi Australia Pty. which was established to coordinate trials of the rare and protected Wollemia nobilis in the United States. Other details can be found in the report for the parent project, 1230-21000-130-00D "ESTABLISH PUBLIC DISPLAY GARDENS FOR WOODY AND HERBACEOUS LANDSCAPE PLANTS". Wollemia nobilis was known only in the fossil record until a small population of living plants was discovered in the 1990’s. The Conifer Curator arranged for import permits and assisted in selecting cooperating Institutions and Nurseries. This year, two separate shipments of plants were processed with a total of more than 300 plants coming in through the quarantine center in New York. Plants have been obtained for display at the U.S. Botanical Garden. A small number of plants have been received for evaluation and testing on the grounds of the USNA. The objectives of this work are to test the adaptability of this species and evaluate its performance as a landscape plant in the U.S.
