Research Project: A LITTLE HELP FROM THE WILD: EXPLOITING WILD RELATIVES OF CHICKPEA FOR RESISTANCE TO HELICOVERPA AND SPODOPTERA POD BORERS

Location: Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a trust agreement between ARS and the ICRISAT. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project, 5348-21000-020-00D entitled, "Plant Germplasm Conservation and Research," and progress over the last year.

During the first year of this three-year USAID funded project, Dr. Clement completed a planned 10 day visit to the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India to participate in initial assays to assess wild chickpea accessions for resistance to Lepidoptera pod-borers. The funds allocated for this project in 2004-2005 ($4,500) were used to fund this trip. He mastered experimental techniques by participating in assays at ICRISAT, which will be used for 2005 and 2006 assays at the USDA, ARS Western Regional Plant Introduction Station. Dr. Clement also gave an invited presentation at ICRISAT on the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System and the Pullman genebank.
