Research Project: BREEDING GRAPEVINE ROOTSTOCKS RESISTANT TO AGGRESSIVE VIRULENT ROOT-KNOT NEMATODE POPULATIONS

Location: Grape Genetics Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a trust fund cooperative agreement between the California Table Grape Commission and ARS. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent 1910-21220-002-00D, "Genetics and Genomics of Grape Rootstock and Scion Interactions with Pathogens."

The major accomplishment for the reporting period: screening of more than 6000 candidate grape rootstock seedlings for resistance to aggressive root-knot nematodes. Only those seedlings which completely suppress nematode reproduction and show zero nematode egg masses are selected for further testing. These selected seedlings are propagated and then planted into the vineyard. More than 350 nematode resistant rootstock selections were planted in the vineyard.
