Research Project: DIVERSITY IN ARGENTINE SOLANUM AND DAUCUS

Location: Vegetable Crops Research Unit

2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Evaluate Argentine Solanum species for tuber chip color, sugars, and molecular markers and Daucus for flowering and markers.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Grow Argentine plant accessions and evaluate Daucus in the field for flowering. Evaluate potato tubers for color before and after chipping, for raw tuber sugars and starch, and for PCR markers.

3.Progress Report
This report serves to document accomplishments under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and The Inst Nacional Technologia Agrop. Additional details of research can be found in the parent project 3655-21000-037-00D. A large collection of D. pusillus has been achieved in Buenos Aires and Mendoza. Two papers dealing with this topic were sent for publication. We found that the breeding barriers between the two species are incomplete, making feasible the obtainment of interspecific hybrids by conventional techniques. For morphological and genetic studies, an experimental plot was established in the field in Balcarce and also at Mendoza. Regarding the study of the genetics of flowering habit in cultivated carrots, the F2 of the crosses made and evaluated during 2005 and 2006 using at least two sowing dates revealed that the flowering habit is controlled by a single major gene to be published July 2007. A field trial of Solanum germplasm was conducted in 2005-2006 to evaluate introductions of species including S. tarijense for agronomic characters and tuber compositional components. Problems in field production were encountered and limited data can be taken from this trial. Project monitored by e-mail discussions of progress every 6-8 weeks.
