Research Project: ENGAGING FARMERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF CORN VARIETIES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 3625-21000-046-00D Breeding High-Quality Corn for Sustainable, Low-Input Farming Systems. PFI arranged:.
1)a project-wide producer meeting in Dubuque, Iowa on March 1, 2006 that was attended by 35 people from seven states and.
2)a research planning meeting of Iowa farmer cooperators on Feb. 10, 2006 in Ames. PFI has integrated producers cooperating with the project into our farmer research network and is promoting their field days with the other events hosted by the network. These events typically attract more than 1,000 persons a year to learn about sustainable farming practices in real-world contexts. In 2005 four breeding project field days drew more than 350. Three project cooperators are scheduled for field days in 2006. This breeding project is entering the period in which there is germplasm that appeals to conventional growers. We anticipate wider interest as results of 2006 trials are released. The results of the on-farm research trials from 2004 – 2006 will be publicized through the Practical Farmers of Iowa newsletter and the annual review of PFI research.
