Research Project:
ENGAGING FARMERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF CORN VARIETIES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research
2004 Annual Report
4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
D. Progress Report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 3625-21000-046-00D Breeding High-Quality Corn for Sustainable, Low-Input Farming Systems. PFI has integrated producers cooperating with the project into our farmer research network and is promoting their field days with the other events hosted by the network. These events typically attract more than 1,000 persons a year to learn about sustainable farming practices in real-world contexts. On October 4, 2003, PFI hosted a workshop and field day near Madrid, on the organic farm used as a nursery for the parent project. This event drew 99 attendees from Iowa and five other states. It provided a rare opportunity for farmers to learn selection methods that they can use in their own operations and for all participants to visually understand the process of bringing exotic quality traits into Midwest-adapted varieties. Four additional farm field days are scheduled for the summer and fall of 2004. The results of the on-farm research trials from 2003 have been publicized through the Practical Farmers of Iowa newsletter and the annual review of PFI research. An afternoon-long producer workshop is scheduled for the Practical Farmers of Iowa winter conference in January, 2005.
