Research Project:
ENGAGING FARMERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF CORN VARIETIES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research
2003 Annual Report
4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
D. Progress Report:
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and the Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 3625-21000-040-00D, entitled Breeding High-Quality Corn for Sustainable, Low-Input Farming Systems. PFI is integrating producers cooperating with the project into our farmer research network and promoting their field days with the other events hosted by the network. These events typically draw more than 1,000 persons a year to learn about sustainable farming practices in real-world contexts. We will have a cooperative October 4 workshop and field day near Madrid, on the organic farm used as a nursery for the parent project, which promises to draw attendees from all over the state, since it will be a rare opportunity for farmers to learn selection methods that they can use in their own operations. As data from on-farm trials comes in this fall, we will assist the project in analysis and summary, and facilitate communication of results to the public through newsletters, the Web, and workshops.
