Research Project: IMPROVEMENT OF THE AZORES HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
What were the most significant accomplishments this past year? This report serves to document activities conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and the Azorean Regional Direction of Health under the Azores Cooperative Initiatives Program (ACIP), as mandated in the 1995 U.S.-Portugal Agreement on Cooperation and Defense and further defined in the Final Minute (95 ACD-FM) to that agreement and funded by Department of Defense. Additional details of research can be found in the report of the parent project plan 0210-22310-002-00D, International Cooperative Programs. In 2004, of the five courses planned in basic life support, three were held on three of the islands (Santa Maria, Graciosa and São Jorge). A course planned for the Health Center of Santa Cruz das Flores was cancelled due to transportation problems. Two courses were held in 2005 at São Miguel Island and Flores Island. The course in São Miguel was on the Protocol of the Manchester System of Selection, an important system for health care professionals in the main hospital of the Azores. This system has now been implemented at the hospital. For 2006, four basic life support courses are planned, including another Manchester training session for the island of Terceira, pending completion of anticipated construction needed in the emergency room of that hospital. The project is anticipated to end once these courses are completed.
