Research Project: TRANSGENES FOR CONTROL OF INSECT PESTS IN COTTON (SYNGENTA)

Location: Genetics and Precision Agriculture Research

2003 Annual Report

4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
This report serves to document research conducted under a trust agreement between ARS and the Syngenta Cooperation. Additional details of research can be found in the report of the parent CRIS 6406-21000-008-00D Germplasm Enhancement and Genetic Improvement of Cotton. Syngenta has a different type of transgene from Bt for insect resistance in cotton. We evaluated their VIP genes for efficacy of control of tobacco budworm and cotton bollworm. If successful, this research would offer new genes in transgenic cotton for insect control and should improve resistance management strategies.
