National Programs
Soil Resource Management
Program Summary:
Projected Outcomes |
|
- New or improved erosion control techniques will be developed.
- Management practices and technologies will be developed to prevent soil
degradation and to remediate degraded soils.
- Management practices will be developed to more effectively use soil
biological resources to improve soil properties and processes; to control
plant diseases, pests and weeds; and to degrade synthetic and natural
toxins.
- Improved management procedures which take advantage of cover crops,
rotations, organic amendments and improvements in residue management will
increase soil organic matter and soil productivity.
- Development of soil quality indicators and indices will allow producers
to assess the sustainability of soil management practices.
- Soil management practices will be developed to enhance crop production
by improving water infiltration, storage and availability in soils.
- A greater understanding of the fate and transformations of fertilizer
and manure derived nutrients in soils will increase nutrient use-efficiency
by crops and reduce off-site environmental effects.
