Assignment: Iraq

Outskirts of Nasiriyah, Iraq: Armed with only a videocamera, Kristen Hickman, Public Affairs Specialist in the Bureau of Public Affairs, went to postwar Iraq to tape U.S. projects ranging from food aid and bridge building to water treatment plants.  With no weapons, maps, or military escort she and her crew experienced first-hand what it was like to avoid sporatic attacks, periodic mortar fire, and forage for food and drinking water while filming in two occupied Iraqi cities--Basra and Nasiriyah--where most of the infrastructure was destroyed. Read her story in State Magazine.
