Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen P. Hughes and Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky to Address Conference on “21st Century Threats To Press Freedom”

Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen P. Hughes will address a conference sponsored by the Broadcasting Board of Governors and Freedom House on "21st Century Threats to Press Freedom" on Tuesday, May 1. The conference, which is open for press coverage, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., will be held in Room 2261 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Addressing the special conference will be Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky on internet freedom. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Barry Lowenkron will moderate one of two panels on the growing threats to press freedom around the world. Congressman Tom Lantos, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, will also deliver remarks to the conference.

The conference will highlight increasing threats to journalists around the world, in particular the record number of journalists killed in 2006. Freedom House will release its annual report "Freedom of the Press 2007" at the event.

Panelists will include Peter Baker, White House reporter and former Moscow Bureau Chief for The Washington Post, Marcel Granier, chairman of Radio Caracas Television in Venezuela, and Afshin Molavi, Fellow, New American Foundation.
