Equivalence Process
While foreign food regulatory systems need not be identical to the U.S. system, they must
employ equivalent sanitary measures that provide the same level of protection against food hazards
as is achieved domestically. Find equivalence regulations here.
Egg Products and Shell Eggs
FSIS has authority over the import of egg products and shell eggs for breaking. FSIS also verifies temperatures of shell eggs
packed for the consumer.
FSIS Labeling Requirements
Imported meat, poultry and egg products must bear labeling that meets FSIS labeling requirements for domestically-produced
products. Foreign establishments should consult the Guide to Federal Food
Labeling Requirements for Meat and Poultry Products to determine the requirements and the process for label approvals.
All labels with special claims require an evaluation by FSIS before they can be applied to imported products.
