Special Hunting Regulations

Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge provides hunting opportunities for small game, migratory birds and white-tailed deer in accordance with all applicable Federal and Minnesota State laws and subject to special Refuge regulations. The Refuge is NOT open to the State special goose hunt, special deer muzzleloader, predator, bear, crow, raccoon or turkey hunting. Please note, only those species listed in the Refuge Hunting brochure and in this home page may be taken. The Refuge is divided into three hunting areas, each with its own regulations. There are also three small areas closed to all hunting. Below is a brief description of the hunting opportunities on the Refuge.

Small Game

The Refuge has two areas open to small game hunting. Ruffed grouse, pheasant, gray and fox squirrel, rabbit, and hare may be taken in Refuge Hunting Areas A and B during the regular state season for these species. Unique to Sherburne is the regulation that shotgun hunters must possess and use only non-toxic shot while hunting small game on the Refuge. The Refuge is NOT open to raccoon hunting.

Migratory Birds

Ducks, coots, geese, rails, woodcock, and snipe can be hunted in Refuge Hunting Area B during the regular state season for these species. Remember, migratory bird hunters must possess and use only non-toxic shot. Additional regulations that may be unique to Sherburne are the following:

  • Field possession of migratory birds is prohibited in areas closed to migratory bird hunting.

  • Unattended property must be removed from the refuge at the end of each day.

  • Only non-motorized boats can be used and must be launched at designated access sites on Long Pool and the St. Francis River

  • The use of dogs while hunting birds is allowed. All dogs must remain under strict control. Dog training and target shooting are not permitted.

  • The Refuge is NOT open to the State special goose hunts, special deer muzzleloader, predator, bear, crow, raccoon, mourning dove or turkey hunting.

Big Game

Sherburne provides archery and shotgun firearms harvest of white-tailed deer, one of the most sought after game species in Minnesota. Archery hunting of white-tailed deer is allowed in Refuge Hunting Areas A and B during the regular state season (see Hunting map,). Areas A, B, and C are open to the firearms harvest of white-tailed deer during the state season. Sherburne is located in the shotgun only portion of MN-DNR Zone 2, and is identified as Permit Area 224. Additional regulations that may be unique to Sherburne are the following:

  • Deer hunting stands, including those made from natural vegetation, and all other hunting equipment must be dismantled or removed from the Refuge at the end of each day.

  • Destruction of natural vegetation is not permitted in placing deer stands. The use of spikes, screw in steps or bolts in trees is not allowed.

  • During firearms-deer season, the Brande Road, off Co. Rd. 9, is closed to all access including foot travel.

  • The Refuge is NOT open to bear, turkey, or special deer muzzleloader hunting.
