September 2008 (The Editor’s Desk is updated each business day.)

Happy 10th Birthday, TED!

The very first issue of The Editor's Desk (TED) was posted on September 28, 1998. TED was the first online-only publication of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For 10 years, BLS has been committed to posting a new TED article each business day, for a total of over 2,400 articles so far.

TED presents highlights of information from all over the Bureau of Labor Statistics in a compact, easy-to-digest format. Each article includes a chart and a link to further information.

Like most of us, TED has changed quite a bit in the past 10 years. In the early days, many of the TED articles did not include a link to the BLS publication on which the article was based, because many BLS publications were not online yet. Nowadays, every TED article links to its source publication, and many of those sources are currently online-only publications themselves.

The biggest changes to TED occurred recently, when TED was overhauled as part of the BLS website redesign that was launched in July 2008. The look of TED was brought up-to-date and a search box was placed on every TED page; also, as a result of the overhaul, each TED has links to the five Latest Articles and numerous links to the TED Index and Archive. In addition, TED is now featured prominently on the BLS homepage every day.

Look for more changes to TED in the next 10 years!
