Director of U.S. Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau Delivers Address in Honor of Women’s History Month

WASHINGTON -- Shinae Chun, Director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau, today addressed over 250 women gathered at the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing in celebration of Women’s History Month. Hosted by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the event’s highlight was a panel discussion on “Women Who are Catalysts for Change.”

“Our nation's women could not be where they are today without the strength, courage and persistence of those who preceded them,” stated Chun. “American women have woven the fabric of families, communities and the workforce, and I will strive to further empower them to meet the challenges of the 21 st century workplace.”

Additional event speakers included Henrietta Fore, director of the U.S. Mint, and Maudine Cooper, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Washington Urban League.

Chun, appointed on May 11, 2001, is the 15 th Director of the Women’s Bureau. She is the highest ranking Korean American in the Bush Administration and heads the only federal agency charged with advocating on behalf of women in the workforce.

The mission of the Women's Bureau is to promote profitable employment opportunities for women; empower them by enhancing their skills and improving their working conditions; and provide employers with more alternatives to meet their labor needs.
