Rep. Norm Dicks in Sequim to Mark Release Of Federal Grant for Olympic Theatre Arts
SEQUIM, WA. – U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks today toured the renovation work being completed on the new Olympic Theatre Arts Center in Sequim as he announced the release of federal funding that has contributed to the overhaul of the building.
Rep. Dicks added $98,000 last year for the construction work to a federal appropriations bill that funds the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funds were released by the Department this week through the “Economic Development Initiatives” program, which recognizes the job creating and local investment potential of urban development projects around the nation.
“I have taken a special interest in this project because I believe the arts can play an important role in bringing this community together and in adding to the quality of life that keeps people here,” the congressman told a meeting of community arts leaders today in Sequim. He said he has worked to encourage cities around the state to “incorporate the arts into their economic development plans because they can leverage private investment and generate very positive economic activity.”
Olympic Theatre Arts has been in existence for 27 years on the Peninsula. The new facility, set to debut later this month, features 159 seats and the other meeting facilities. Rep. Dicks noted that “it will give the Sequim community a larger and brighter venue to offer musical and dramatic productions, and I am impressed to see the shows already planned for the 2008-2009 season: Broadway music, family theater, the Murder Mystery dinner theater and a Neil Simon play to finish the season.”
