LOS ALAMOS, N.M., September 6, 2005 — Los Alamos National Laboratory technical staff member Elizabeth (Betsy) Cantwell will talk about some of the critical risks for ambitious manned flights beyond Earth's low orbit in a talk Sept. 13 at Los Alamos' Bradbury Science Museum. The talk begins at noon and is free and open to the public.

Cantwell is a deputy division leader for science and technology in Los Alamos' International, Space and Response Division. She also retains a consulting role as an adviser to NASA's research and development and risk portfolios pursuant to the president's new exploration missions back to the moon and on to Mars.

In the talk, "What About Getting People to Mars?" Cantwell will discuss human-technology interactions, as well as team interactions that become critical components for flights that are several months or years long. She also will talk about technical problems, such as ionizing radiation, solar particle events and galactic cosmic rays and engineering challenges for astronauts.

Cantwell began her career building life support systems for manned space missions with NASA. She will bring this perspective to her talk about research issues for sending a human crew to Mars.

Prior to joining the Laboratory in June, Cantwell worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Micro and Nanotechnology Center. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Chicago, a master's of business administration from the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania, and master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Cantwell's talk is co-sponsored by Los Alamos Women in Science.

The Bradbury Science Museum is located at 15th Street and Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. Museum hours apart from special events are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday.

The Bradbury Science Museum is part of Los Alamos' Public Affairs Office.
