About Us
Vision
Oregon's heritage is more than history, and it is more than historic artifacts or documents in a museum. It is brick on a historic downtown building, hand-hewn beams in a homestead barn, smoke rising from a powwow campfire, and sounds from a community celebration. Heritage is stories about people and places, and traditions handed down by elders.

Heritage links us to the past, and it influences how we think about the future. It inspires us as citizens, and it represents us in the imaginations of our visitors. Oregon's heritage is rich, dramatic and sometimes tragic; we embrace it and we work to preserve it.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Oregon Heritage Commission is to secure, sustain, and enhance Oregon's heritage by ensuring:
  • Coordination of heritage initiatives by public and private organizations
  • Advocacy for all levels of support on its behalf
  • Education of the public about its extent and value
  • Promotion and celebration of its diversity
Organization
Annual Performance Measures

Established by the Oregon Legislature in 1995, the Heritage Commission is comprised of nine gubernatorial appointments and eight ex-officio members. The gubernatorial appointments each serve 4-year terms, and represent the geographic and cultural diversity of the state. The ex-officio commissioners represent the Oregon Historical Society, the State Library, the State Archives, the State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Education, the Oregon University System, the Land Conservation and Development Department, and the Economic and Community Development Department.
