Getting to the Office and Parking:
The State Historic Preservation Office is located in the North Mall Office Building on the State Capitol Mall. The map above shows the approximate location. The most convenient parking and access to the building is off Winter Street, one block west of Summer Street. To get to the office on southbound I-5 take exit 256 (Market Street) from I-5, turn left on Winter Street. The office is located on the east side of Winter Street between D and Union Streets. When coming northbound on I-5 or Highway 22, take exit number 253 from I-5 (Salem-Stayton). After exiting, take Highway 22 west toward the city center, Highway 22 becomes Mission Street. Exit Mission Street at the Willamette University/City Center Exit and remain in the right-hand lane. There will be a sign that says "State Offices." The road will transition to 13th and then 12th Street. Turn left on Court Street, which is the third traffic light from the exit. Turn right on Winter Street. The office is located on the east side of Winter Street between Union and D Streets.

Free parking is available on the east side of Winter Street; however, it is very limited. Visitors should plan on parking at 2-10 hour coin-operated meters. Rates are .25c for each 23 minutes. If staying for the day, consider parking at the "Yellow" lot at the corner of Winter and Center Streets, two blocks north of the capitol building. An all-day pass may be purchased from a kiosk located at the south end of the lot for $6.00. The machine accepts cash in $1.00 and $5.00 bills and credit and debit cards. For $7.00 an all-day pass good at select city parking meters can be purchased in the state Capitol building, room 49.
Note to Researchers:
Research appointments to review National Register and survey files or to search the Oregon Historic Sites Database should be made in advance to ensure access. When making a reservation, please specify how many hours you intend to stay, what documents you are interested in, and whether you intend to take digital scans or make photocopies of the documents you are reviewing. Photocopies are 20 cents for each page. Scans are free; however, researchers must bring their own digital storage device, such as a CD-R or USB 2.0 compatible portable hard drive. Please note that the office does not have the capability to create DV-Rs.
