Conferees visiting the Washburne Historic District
A Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza, including the 2009 Oregon Heritage Conference and several other regional history and heritage organizations' annual meetings, will take place in the Portland area next spring. You are invited to present your ideas and suggestions for the 3-day event at noon Aug. 6 in the Madison Room of the Oregon Historical Society, 1200 SW Park Ave., Portland.

The Oregon Heritage Conference seeks to inform and inspire Oregonians involved in the state's cultural heritage efforts. Attendees include community leaders, staff and volunteers from historical societies, museums, historic cemeteries, ethnic organizations, schools, historic preservation commissions, humanities groups, the tourism industry, economic development, history buffs and professional historians, youth, archaeologists, and local, tribal, state and federal governments.

Last year's conference attracted 300 people to Eugene; we hope to double that total for Portland.

In light of Oregon's statehood sesquicentennial, several other organizations will join the Oregon Heritage Commission, to create the Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza. These include the Northwest Archivists and the Northwest Oral History Association. The Pacific Northwest History Conference, which is organized annually by the Washington State Historical Society, will also be part of this 2009 extravaganza. The Oregon Historical Society will also assist.

The 2009 conference will highlight the host community and state. Previous conferences have included workshops, walking tours, speakers, bus tours, seminars and meetings, both at the conference site and at heritage sites. It also will include the third annual Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards and presentations by university students who have been selected as Oregon Heritage Fellows. Your suggestions for conference content and logistics will be sought at this initial planning meeting.

If you plan to attend the Aug. 6 meeting or want  more information about the conference, contact Kyle Jansson at 503-986-0673 or heritage.info@state.or.us
