About Us
Vision
SHPO Archaeological Services strives to protect archaeological sites throughout the state of Oregon by reviewing development projects that are required under state and federal laws to consider their impacts to cultural resources. We work with citizens to provide education on cultural heritage issues, current state cultural resource laws and regulations, and resolve potentially conflicting concerns between development, scientific research and respectful treatment of cultural resources.

Within the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, we work closely with our agency's park managers and cultural resource planners to identify and protect archaeological resources on State Park-owned land.

SHPO Archaeological Services maintains a statewide archaeological inventory database that meets federal regulatory standards. The staff inventories newly discovered sites as well as provides guidance relating to the identification, documentation and protection of archaeological sites.

One of SHPO Archaeological Services' main responsibilities is the issuance of Archaeological Excavation Permits. An Archaeological Permit is required for archaeological excavations on public lands and any excavations within an existing archaeological site on private lands.

The SHPO also maintains a state inventory of historic properties and archaeological sites. The information resulting from surveys is known as the State Survey Data.

SHPO Archaeological Services is also involved in the following SHPO programs; Survey and Inventory, National Register Program, and Historic Preservation Grants.
