The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) was founded in 1926, and provides services and public policy advocacy for trucking companies hauling freight into, out of and within the Province of Ontario. OTA member fleets operate over two-thirds of all commercial tractor-trailers carrying freight on Ontario roadways and employ over 70,000 men and women who work in the trucking industry. OTA is the only trucking association in Ontario that represents all segments of the industry-for-hire carriers, private carriers, intermodal, suppliers, etc.
To support the goals of the SmartWay program, OTA has:
- Promoted the SmartWay truck and trailer concept in Canada (through the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA)) to introduce incentives and technology validation system for various aerodynamic devices.
- Co-sponsored a media event in Ottawa with the CTA featuring trucks and trailers equipped with SmartWay fuel-saving devices. This event also featured the release of a CTA study, conducted by Rocky Mountain Institute, which quantified the investment needed by industry to produce environmental savings of various fuel-saving technologies.
- Hosted 10 media events throughout the province highlighting OTA members that purchased 2007-compliant trucks, and presented members with plaques of recognition for showing environmental leadership.
- Hosted media events and lobbied provincial government regarding the environmental benefits of mandatory control of truck speeds.
In addition, OTA is lobbying the provincial government to remove regulatory penalties for wide-based tires and trailer aerodynamic devices.
“The Ontario Trucking Association is very proud to be a SmartWay Affiliate. The goals and objectives of SmartWay make sound environmental and business sense. The Ontario Trucking Association will continue to advocate for the increased presence of more SmartWay approved trucks and trailers on North American roads.”
