Field Trip Opportunities

Friendship Hill offers many themes for field trip programs. The Albert Gallatin: Champion of Democracy Educational Guide is designed to help teachers prepare their classes for the on-site visit for the first three themes. The Jr. and Sr. High field trips compliment the environmental curricula presented in the Stewardship in Action program. At Friendship Hill, students will tour the historic Gallatin house and participate in a variety of challenging activities related to the chosen theme. Teachers should plan a minimum of two hours per theme. School Group visits are welcome any time of the year. For reservations call 724-725-9190.

The Whiskey Rebellion - 4th - 6th grade

Woodcut - Farmer carrying whiskeyActivity: Students act as a jury of their peers as the class re-creates the infamous 1795 Whiskey Rebellion Trial held in Philadelphia. In a mock trial, some students portray farmers arrested for failure to pay the "Whiskey Tax". The Park Ranger portrays the prosecution and presents evidence while the defendants defend their actions to the jury which will decide their fate.

Secretary of the Treasury - 4th - 6th grades

Activity: Teams of students participate in a board game representing one fiscal year during Gallatin's term as Secretary of the Treasury. Teams are given $15 million dollars and must navigate the board, avoiding over spending, growing debt and possible bankruptcy of the nation. The team with the most money to be put toward the debt at the end of the game wins.

Westward Expansion - 4th - 6th grades

Activity: Each Student is given a journal book as the class takes a hike with a Corps of Discovery Scout (aka - Park Ranger). Along the trail, the students record and draw their observations of nature that will be sent to President Jefferson and Secretary of the Treasury Gallatin. The class will discuss their notes at the end of the hike.

Note: This program requires the class to spend time outdoors. Proper clothing and shoes are required. Severe or dangerous weather will cause the cancellation of the program.

Discovery Crate -Preschool through 3rd grade

Activity: A wooden crate, left forgotten, was discovered in the attic of the old stone house. Inside were found items belonging to a one time resident of Friendship Hill, Albert Gallatin. We invite you class to explore these treasured items of a bygone period. Students become historians as they attempt to discover what the objects are and what they tell us about Gallatin and his family.

Water Quality Testing at the Acid Mine Drainage Facility - Jr. and Sr. High School

The inactive pulsed limestone reactor facility is located on the other side of Route 166 for the main unit of the park. NO busses are allowed up the facility road. Students will either cross Route 166 with their teachers/chaperones or be dropped off at the base of the facility road. The park will try to make accommodations for students with special needs. After walking to the facility the students will meet the park ranger. The ranger will guide the group to the mine portal and explain how the pulse limestone reactors treated the severely polluted Acid Mine Drainage water. Next, students will get a hands-on experience testing water samples for iron and pH. The students will also see how the limestone affects water quality.
This activity takes about 1 ½ hours (including walking time).

Activity: Aquatic macroinvertebrates (small insects and other organisms that can the seen with the eye) are excellent indicators of overall water quality. Students will get to look at the macroinvertebrates found in Dublin Run. Some of these animals are only found in very clean water, some are found in mildly polluted water, and a very few can live in severely polluted water. By sampling the organisms the students will determine the overall water quality of the stream.
This activity by itself takes about 1 hour (including walking time).

The Constructed Wetlands at Friendship Hill - Jr. and Sr. High

Students will meet the park ranger and walk to the constructed wetlands. There they will hear about the research that was conducted at this site. Students will learn about what the scientists discovered and why Friendship Hill decided not to use a constructed wetland.
This activity by itself takes about 45 minutes (including walking time).

Orienteering - Upper Elementary, Jr. and Sr. High

Activity: Students use map and compass to negotiate a course through the park. Two courses are available. On the short course, students remain on the knoll within view of the Gallatin house. The advanced course takes students 1.5 miles through the woods and meadows of Friendship Hill. This program is teacher instructed.
