Plan A Field Trip

We want your classroom’s visit to the park to be a fun learning experience. Please review these guidelines:

  • It is extremely important that teachers share the contents of the Information Packet with all other teachers, chaperones, bus drivers, or volunteers who will be coming on the field trip. We send confirmation packets with park information, extra brochures, the school’s itinerary, and lesson plans at least two weeks prior to the field trip.
  • Teachers are responsible for student discipline. Remember, your students are sharing the park with other visitors.
  • Students should dress appropriately for the weather. Wear comfortable shoes. Some parts of the program are held rain or shine.
  • All school buses and parents should meet the Park Ranger at the visitor center for orientation.
  • Park Rangers will meet students at the designated program sites (see below). Teacher Handbooks (a battlefield guide for teachers) are available upon request at the visitor center. This handbook is filled with information about the park’s history, historic features, and Civil War trivia.
  • The visitor center auditorium has a 48 person seating capacity.
  • The picnic area is open year-round and handicapped accessible restrooms are available from May-October. We do not take reservations for the picnic area. There are no snack/vending machines.
  • All park programs require reservations (reservation form and information). A confirmation letter and pre-visit package will be mailed to the teachers when a reservation is confirmed. The packet contains a map and information about the park. PLEASE NOTE: The reservation is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation letter from the park.
  • Contact Susan Hawkins at 931-232-5706, ext. 104, e-mail or Deborah Austin, 931-232-5706, ext. 103, e-mail for more information.

Did You Know?
The bear that you see in the park may be older than you think. Brown bears can live up to 30 years, although 20 years or less is more common.
