Revenues for motion picture and video firms rose 6 percent to $64 billion in 2003, from $60 billion in 2002, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today.

Data from the 2003 Service Annual Survey: Information Services — Motion Picture and Sound Recording Industries report show revenues for the nation’s motion picture and sound recording industries combined, reached $78 billion in 2003, an increase of 5 percent over 2002.

     Additional highlights:

  • Motion picture and video production and distribution revenues increased 7 percent, to $48 billion. Revenues from licensing of domestic motion picture films were $12 billion; and revenues from domestic licensing of television programs were $11 billion.

  • Motion picture theaters revenues increased to $12 billion, up 6 percent. Feature film exhibition of domestic films made up 68 percent of the 2003 estimate, at $8 billion; while food and beverage sales made up 28 percent of the 2003 estimate, at $3 billion.

  • Integrated record production and distribution revenues remained the same, at $10 billion.

Estimates in this report are based on data from the 2003 Service Annual Survey. They contain sampling and nonsampling errors. To keep the identity of an individual firm confidential, some estimates may be suppressed. Users making their own estimates, based on the survey estimates, should cite the U.S. Census Bureau as the source of the original estimates only.
See <http://www.census.gov/econ/www/servmenu.html> for measures of sampling variability and other survey information.
