Increase 24 Percent in 2004

Revenues for investment-advice services reached $18 billion in 2004 — a 24 percent increase from revised 2003 figures — according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released today. Investment banking, and security dealings and portfolio management services revenues also featured significant increases.

The report, titled 2004 Service Annual Survey: Securities, Commodity Contracts, and Other Financial Investments and Related Activities, shows revenues for employer firms. Highlights include:

  • Portfolio management services generated $81 billion in revenues, an
increase of 13 percent from 2003. Investment banking and securities
dealings rose 18 percent, to $127 billion.

  • Commodity contracts services produced revenues of $4 billion in
dealing and $3 billion in brokerage, up 16 percent and 12 percent.

  • Services for securities brokerage rose 5 percent, to $116 billion,
    in 2004.
