Census Bureau Names New Regional Director in Charlotte

The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that William “Wayne” Hatcher, a long-time survey statistician and supervisor for the statistical agency, has been named director of its Charlotte, N.C., regional office.

Hatcher, who has 21 years of experience at the Census Bureau, most recently served as assistant director for the agency’s Denver regional office. Previously, he worked in the Charlotte regional office from 1987 to 1995 as a survey statistician, regional recruiter, area manager and administrative supervisor.

As regional director, he will be responsible for gathering demographic and economic data from households in a five-state area — Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Charlotte has the largest resident population and the second largest number of housing units among the Census Bureau’s 12 regional offices.

Born in Decatur, Ga., Hatcher graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1973 with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. He received the Census Bureau’s Bronze Medal in 1999, and is a two-time recipient of the agency’s Equal Employment Opportunity Award.

Besides the once-a-decade census, the Census Bureau also conducts monthly household surveys through its 12 regional offices – collecting important demographic and economic data from households nationwide. Producing hundreds of reports a year on the nation’s changing population and economy, census data help governmental officials, community leaders and businesses plan for the future in their communities. All census data are strictly confidential and personal information is protected by law.
