Census Bureau Plans to Switch to Organization-Based
                Passwords for Media Embargo Page

The Census Bureau's Public Information Office is instituting a new password system for gaining authorized access to its news release embargo page on the Internet. During a transition period, the bureau will move from a system of usernames and passwords for individual reporters to one of a single organization-based username and password for each media organization.

The need for the new system comes as the bureau continues to receive numerous requests on a daily basis from reporters to access its embargo page. As a result, the bureau's server is rapidly becoming overwhelmed with passwords.

During the month of April, your organization will be issued one password to be used by all reporters in your organization. You will be notified via e-mail when your new username and password have been activated, at which time you are free to share them with the reporters in your organization who need access to the embargo page.

During this transition, you may continue to use your current username and password. Should you experience any difficulty accessing the embargo page, please contact the Public Information Office on (301) 763-3030 to request a temporary password. By early May, the new system will be in place, and all the old individual passwords will be deactivated.

We are making every effort to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible and appreciate your cooperation during this period.
