Web-based Resource Directory

On This Page

Background

  1. Job Service North Dakota — North Dakota used a 2002-2003 DOL grant to create SHARE (Sharing How Access to Resources Empowers) Network (www.sharenetworknd.com) — a Web-based Resource Directory — which has continued to operate successfully since the grant completed. The comprehensive Web-based Resource Directory includes faith-based, community-based, and national non-profits; government agencies; and for-profit organizations that provide more than 100 different types of service to help individuals obtain social services or job training, find a job, and advance in employment. The directory is integrated into North Dakota's service delivery system and allows the job counselors to make reliable referrals to meet all of their customers' challenges on their way toward self-sufficiency. There were two keys to the sustainability of this project. First, every organization listed in the directory, called SHARE Network Member, updates their contact and service information online on a quarterly basis, which means the updates do not require significant staff time. Second, sufficient momentum was created so that new SHARE Network Members are applying online to join the network all the time. More information about the Job Service North Dakota SHARE Network project is available at: http://www.dol.gov/cfbci/bridgingthegap.pdf.

  2. U.S. Department of Labor's SHARE Network Initiative — Through the SHARE Network Initiative, the U.S. Department of Labor is providing a free two-year license for a state-customized, Web-based Resource Directory to twelve states. Along with the SHARE Network license, DOL is providing technical assistance on how to populate the database using effective outreach strategies and on integrating the database into service delivery. As of January 25, 2007, there are openings for three more states to participate in SHARE Network and create both a Web-based Resource Directory and Access Points statewide. You may e-mail pelman.erica@dol.gov for more information or call (202) 693-6451.

Sample Plan

  1. For states participating in SHARE Network, please list your goals for number of resources in the directory by July 2008 and July 2009 and your future plans for the SHARE Network Initiative.

  2. For states not participating in SHARE Network, your state may have a statewide, regularly updated, Web-based Resource Directory of service providers that you have not yet integrated into your service delivery system. If you plan to integrate the Web-based Resource Directory into service delivery over the next two years, please:

    1. Name the Web-based, statewide, Resource Directory that you will be integrating into your service delivery system and the agency which is responsible for that directory;

    2. Describe the directory, including the number of providers and the types of services listed that are related to supporting people to obtain social services or job training, find a job, and advance in employment; and

    3. Describe how you will train your staff to utilize the directory between July–December 2007.
