Daguerreotypes require special handling. Digital images provide a reference surrogate. Researchers whose focus of study depends upon the artifactual qualities of the original which are not derivable from a reference copy may request access to the originals. Such access is provided by appointment only in the Prints and Photographs Division's Reading Room.
