Guide to Navigation....

This is a multi-part presentation, which includes a section for each of the nations from which the largest numbers of people emigrated to the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. A section on the Native American is included, as well, to show what happened to the First People as waves of immigrants arrived in this nation.


Within the pages of each immigrant group section you will find:

timeline icon

A timeline, located to the right of the browser display, which, when rolled over, reveals pertinent dates for the immigrants discussed in that section

ethnic map icon

 A globe, located at the left side of the browser display, which, when clicked, leads to an interactive map of the United States showing the port(s) of entry and migration patterns of the immigrant group discussed in that section.

global map icon

 A watch face, located at the left side of the browser display, which, when clicked, reveals pertinent dates for all the immigrant groups discussed in this presentation.

The pages of each immigrant section can be navigated from links at the bottom of the page. At the top of all pages are links to additional sections of this feature presentation and a link to go "home" (which takes you to the opening slide show). The site sections are:

  • Introduction (you are here!)
  • Vocabulary - an index to interactive, vocabulary activities.
  • Resources - links to lessons, related Web links, bibliography, and a guide to images and sounds used in the feature presentation.
  • Interviews - read student interviews with immigrants who arrived in the U.S. from the mid-20th century to the early 21st century ( collected 2005 – 2006).
  • Potluck - enjoy the recipes and their stories  in the Great American Potluck (collected 2002 – 2006).
  • Conclusion - an opportunity for closure and reflection about what has been learned.
