Question Taken at Daily Briefing of Nov. 5, 2003

Cambodia - Formation of Coalition Government

2003/1128

Question:   What is the U.S. reaction to recent developments that a coalition government has been formed in Cambodia?

Answer:   We have seen the November 5 announcement that the three parties that won seats in Cambodia's National Assembly elections on July 27 have agreed in principle to form a tripartite government.

This agreement to form a tripartite government is an important step in ending the political stalemate in Cambodia. We note, however, that the new government has not yet been formally named and that the three parties are still working out the implementation of the agreement.

Released on November 6, 2003
