Question Taken at the August 13 Daily Press Briefing

Reports of Alleged Denial of Meetings between the Spiritual Leader of Cyprus and the Ecumenical Patriarch (Taken Question)

Question: Can we confirm/comment on reports that Turkish Authorities denied the Spiritual Leader of Cyprus' Request to Meet the Ecumenical Patriarch of Istanbul?

The United States has great respect for Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who is a religious leader of world standing, and for Archbishop Chrysostomos.

We would refer you to the Turkish Government for any information on visitors to Turkey.

Promotion of religious freedom and human rights are integral to U.S. foreign policy.
