Afghanistan: Strategic Options Paper

Director of National Drug Control Policy John P. Walters and Coordinator for Counter-narcotics and Justice Reform in Afghanistan and Acting Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Ambassador Thomas Schweich will deliver remarks on the release of a comprehensive new U.S. Government implementation plan to control narcotics in Afghanistan on Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in the State Department Press Briefing Room (2209). Other interagency representatives from the Office of National Drug Control Policy, USAID, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of State will be present and available to answer questions.

This on-the-record, on-camera briefing is open for press coverage. Members of the press who do not have a State Department building pass should arrive at the 23rd Street entrance by 9:45 a.m. for clearance through security and access to the briefing room.

Media representatives may attend this briefing upon presentation of one of the following:

(1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).

The full text of the report will be available for downloading from the State Department website at www.state.gov soon after the press conference.
