Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte to Address Special Naturalization Ceremony

Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte will deliver the keynote address at a special naturalization ceremony honoring four naturalized citizens with the prestigious American by Choice recognition on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Room at the Department of State. Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Emilio Gonzalez, will swear-in 50 new Americans.

The four American By Choice awards, which recognize outstanding achievements of naturalized U.S. citizens, will go to:

  • Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement.
  • Charles Simic, Poet Laureate of the United States and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
  • Rosario Marin, Secretary of the California State and Consumer Services Agency, and former Treasurer of the United States.
  • Dr. Elsa Murano, President of Texas A&M University and former Under Secretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This event is open for press coverage.

To attend this event, members of the media must present one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver's license or passport). Press should enter at 23rd Street Entrance.
