Taken Question Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC February 7, 2008 Question Taken at the February 7 Daily Press Briefing Iran Silences Women’s Magazine
Question: Does the State Department have any reaction to reports that Iranian authorities have ordered the closure of a popular women’s magazine? Answer: The United States has been clear in calling on the Iranian regime to cease the systematic oppression of its citizens, including efforts to stifle the press. The Iranian people deserve guarantees of basic liberties, as well as a more transparent political process. The closure of Zanan and other media outlets over the past few years is yet another sign that the regime in Tehran refuses to respect the freedom of thought and expression spelled out in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. The United States remains committed to a vigorous effort to support Iranian civil society and democratic reform. Furthermore we will continue to work with the international community through the United Nations, foreign governments, and international NGOs to focus attention on the Iranian regime's continued abuse of its own citizens, including journalists. 2008/090 |
