Question Taken at the June 22, 2007 Press Briefing

China - Taiwan at the Senior Dialogue

Question: Did the Taiwan referendum issue come up in the Senior Dialogue?

Answer: The Fourth Round of the U.S. China Senior Dialogue, held June 20-21, covered a wide range of key bilateral, regional and global issues. The importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait was among the issues discussed by Deputy Secretary Negroponte and Executive Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo. The Chinese raised concerns about various issues relating to Taiwan, and we reiterated our long-standing positions.

Question: What is U.S. policy on referenda in Taiwan?

Answer: The United States is not opposed to referenda in principle. We appreciate and strongly support Taiwan's democratic development. The United States opposes any initiative that appears designed to change Taiwan’s status unilaterally. This would include a referendum on whether to apply to the United Nations under the name Taiwan.
