| Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC September 26, 2006 Iceland: End of Permanent Stationing of US Military ForcesThe United States and Iceland have negotiated a package of agreements to manage the turnover to Iceland of land and facilities at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Keflavik. These agreements will establish a framework for future bilateral cooperation in the defense of Iceland and for our overall security relationship with this NATO Ally. The agreements, to be signed over the course of the next few weeks, mark the successful conclusion of negotiations conducted since March 15, when the United States announced it would end the permanent stationing of military forces in Iceland. The new agreements reinforce the long-standing commitment by the U.S. to defend Iceland in accordance with the bilateral 1951 Defense Agreement and the North Atlantic Treaty. 2006/ 869
