Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC September 25, 2006 Assistant Secretary Claudia A. McMurray Participates in a Ceremony Welcoming an Orphaned Snow Leopard to the Bronx ZooToday Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment, and Science Claudia A. McMurray represented the Department of State at a ceremony marking the arrival of an orphaned snow leopard from Pakistan at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo. Assistant Secretary McMurray, who played a key role in facilitating the snow leopard’s transfer to the Bronx Zoo, read a letter from First Lady Laura Bush welcoming the cub to its new home. The First Lady of Pakistan, Mrs. Pervez Musharraf, also spoke at the ceremony hosted by Wildlife Conservation Society President Steven Sanderson. The orphaned snow leopard cub, one of the world’s most endangered mammals, was transferred from the northern Pakistan region of Upper Naltar to a temporary home at the Bronx Zoo in August. The efforts undertaken on the cub’s behalf are a model of international public-private cooperation, involving the collaborative efforts of the governments of Pakistan and the United Kingdom, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the World Conservation Union, World Wildlife Fund-Pakistan, British Airlines, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, and the U.S. Department of State.
