Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Host Reception to Honor Long-Standing Partnership with the United States Marine Corps

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will host a reception and give brief remarks to celebrate the long-standing relationship between the Department of State and the United States Marine Corps on Thursday, September 14, 2006 at 6:00 p.m., in the Benjamin Franklin Room, at the Department of State. Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security and Director of the Office of Foreign Missions, Richard J. Griffin, will also give remarks.

Lieutenant General Jan C. Huly Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies, and Operations, Headquarters, of the U.S. Marine Corps, and Lieutenant General Ron Christmas, United States Marine Corps (Retired) and President of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will speak on behalf of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

The reception is being held to honor and recognize the history and important role of the United States Marine Corps in protecting embassies and consulates overseas. This service, known as the Department of State’s Marine Security Guard Program, has supported United States diplomacy since 1949.

The Secretary’s remarks, at approximately 6:30 p.m., are open for press coverage.

Pre-set time for cameras: 5:00 p.m. from the C Street entrance.

Final access time for all press: 6:10 p.m. from the C Street entrance.

Media representatives may attend this briefing upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
