COLUMBIA- John Walter Wynn was arrested
without incident Monday night in Conway. Wynn, 41, was the subject
of a February 2006 Prince George County (Maryland) warrant for
murder. Wynn is alleged to have shot his female victim multiple
times before fleeing Maryland and eventually landing in Conway. He
had been a fugitive for over two years.
Wynn was booked into the J.
Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway awaiting extradition
proceedings. In announcing the arrest, United States Marshal Johnny
Mack Brown said, “It is very gratifying to apprehend someone who has
been on the run for so long. He was able to evade capture for over
two years, but now Wynn will have to answer his charges in
Maryland.”
Established in 1789, the United States Marshals Service is the
nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. In fiscal 2007, the
Marshals arrested more than 36,000 federal fugitives, clearing
38,900 felony warrants. Marshals Service-led task forces like South
Carolina’s Operation Intercept arrested 46,800 state and local
fugitives, clearing 58,663 state and local fugitives clearing 70,329
felony warrants. Locally, Operation Intercept arrested over 2,500
South Carolina fugitives during that same period. More information
